Plato Gorgias Essay Topics - A Commentary on Platos Crito
Plato Gorgias Essay Topics - A Commentary on Plato's CritoThe Platos Plato Gorgias essay topics will not be taken from the 'Foundations of Logic'. Rather, they will be drawn from his Crito, or Dialogues and Speeches. The Crito was written for two reasons. Plato wanted to help his disciple Crito (Plato's biographer Plutarch) write a better criticism of his life and philosophy. Also, he knew that he needed to defend himself against a major controversy. The first part of the Crito has been lost; however, this part is better understood by looking at the fifth of Plato's dialogues, the dialogues and speeches. There are two key themes in these dialogues. One is an attack on Plato's mentor and teacher Aristotle, Plato's major opponent in the 'Poetics' school. The other is a defense of the idea that truth is a virtue and Socrates does not live up to his ideals. So, who is doing the writing in these dialogues? The most obvious person to think of is Plato. He is writing under the influence of his friend Phaedrus, who also wanted to remove some of the philosophical mistakes he had made. But, other writers are also involved. Socrates is mentioned several times in the dialogue as being a character of great influence on Plato, both for his style and his rhetoric. This is the second MS. Simon refers to in his essay. The MS. Simon is the Phaedrus MSS. It can be found in the Second Part of the 'Apology'.The 'Apology' is a central text in Plato's mature works and is considered to be the last of his 'Ethics' writings. In it, Plato attacks the idea that virtue is a matter of taste. So, this MS. Simon's essay, whether true or not, should be read with careful attention. But the story he tells is one of the classic arguments from Plato's Crito. If Plato and his closest supporters are right, then he must have had something to say about Plato and his follower of Socrates.
